The Ghana Police Service has arrested two men in connection with the possession of a significant quantity of suspected narcotic substances during a routine patrol operation in the Ayi Mensah area of the Greater Accra Region.

The suspects, identified as Mathew Narkotey and Augustine Teye, were intercepted on June 7, 2025, by officers from the National Operations Department (NOD). They were traveling in a Mazda pick-up truck with registration number GT 3490-P when the police conducted a search of the vehicle.

Inside the truck, officers discovered eleven large, compressed sacks of what is suspected to be illegal narcotic substances. The packages were concealed in the rear compartment of the vehicle.

Vehicle and Evidence Seized

According to a police statement, the vehicle and the suspected drugs have been impounded and secured at the Joint Operations Centre. Authorities say the seizure is part of an ongoing national effort to disrupt drug trafficking networks and clamp down on illegal narcotics in circulation.

“The items have been secured for evidential purposes, and investigations are ongoing,” the statement said.

Suspects in Custody

The two suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators with further details regarding the origin and destination of the substances. Early interrogations have led to the mention of another individual, one Martey, believed to be the intended recipient of the consignment.

Hunt for Third Suspect

The police say active efforts are underway to locate and arrest Martey, who is now considered a person of interest in the investigation. Authorities have urged members of the public with relevant information to come forward.

“We are following all credible leads to ensure everyone involved in this illegal operation is brought to justice,” a senior officer familiar with the operation noted.

National Response to Drug Trafficking

This arrest is part of a broader security strategy by the Ghana Police Service and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to stem the flow of illegal drugs across the country. The strategic location of Ayi Mensah—situated at a key junction between the Eastern Region and Greater Accra—makes it a hotspot for such trafficking activities.

Authorities have increased highway patrols, intelligence-led operations, and community surveillance as part of the national crackdown.

A 30-year-old unemployed woman, Mavis Nkrumah, has been arrested by the Tesano Divisional Police Command for allegedly attacking her taxi driver ex-boyfriend with a substance suspected to be acid.

According to graphic.com.gh, Nkrumah, who reportedly attempted to flee Ghana after the incident, had visited her ex-lover, Gideon Frimpong, to confirm their breakup when she allegedly poured the substance on him.

Superintendent of Police Julianna Obeng, Head of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command’s Public Affairs Unit, disclosed this in a news brief.

“The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested Mavis Nkrumah, a 30-year-old woman, for allegedly pouring a liquid substance suspected to be acid on her ex-boyfriend at Ablekuma Fan Milk, a suburb of Accra,” the report quoted her as saying.

Superintendent Obeng also stated that initial investigations indicate that on May 28, 2025, around 1:00 am, Mavis arrived unannounced at the victim’s residence the very night of the attack.

She explained that the 29-year-old taxi driver, Gideon Frimpong, had a brief conversation with Mavis, during which she requested that he drive her home, to which Frimpong agreed and offered to take her.

“On reaching a section of the road, Frimpong requested Mavis to alight since the road ahead was bumpy and rough,” the brief said.

Superintendent Obeng further recounted that Mavis once again questioned Frimpong about their relationship.

It added that after he confirmed for the third time that he had indeed broken up with her, she allegedly stepped out of the car and poured a substance suspected to be acid through the driver’s side.

Superintendent Obeng added that; “The victim, Frimpong, was identified by a group of people and subsequently rushed to the hospital, where he was treated for injuries sustained at the back, neck, among other parts of the body and he has since been discharged.”

She stated that Mavis, the suspect, fled the scene after the incident and attempted to escape into a neighbouring country.

However, on June 3, 2025, police arrested her, and she is currently in custody.

On Monday, June 9, 2025, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) will start imposing the new GHS1 Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy on petroleum goods.

This action falls under the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141), which was passed in order to raise money to compensate for deficiencies in the energy sector, pay off legacy debts, and stabilize the nation’s power supply.

The new levy has an impact on a number of important fuel items, per Tariff Interpretation Order (TIO) No. 2025/003, which was issued by Commissioner-General Mr. Anthony Kwasi Sarpong.

The tax on gasoline (super, motor spirit) and diesel (gas oil) will increase from GHS0.95 and GHS0.93 per liter to GHS1.95 and GHS1.93 respectively.

While liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will continue to trade at its existing pricing of GHS0.73, marine gas oil and heavy fuel oil will also witness hikes.

All parties involved in the petroleum sector have been instructed by the GRA to carefully adhere to the new tariffs.

The previous levy rates will be applied to petroleum items that were lifted prior to June 9, 2025. Nonetheless, the updated levies will apply to any cash-and-carry transactions involving products that are lifted on or after the effective date.
