Newcastle United 2–0 Chelsea: Magpies Strengthen Champions League Bid with Commanding Win
May 11, 2025 – St. James’ Park, Newcastle
Newcastle United delivered a decisive 2–0 victory over Chelsea, propelling themselves to third place in the Premier League standings and bolstering their aspirations for Champions League qualification.
Early Dominance Sets the Tone
The Magpies wasted no time asserting control, with Sandro Tonali netting the opener just two minutes into the match. Capitalizing on a high press, Tonali intercepted a pass and unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the box, leaving Chelsea’s goalkeeper with no chance.

Chelsea’s situation deteriorated in the 35th minute when Nicolas Jackson received a straight red card for elbowing Sven Botman, reducing the visitors to ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Chelsea managed to maintain possession but struggled to penetrate Newcastle’s organized defense.
Guimarães Seals the Victory
As Chelsea pushed forward in search of an equalizer, they left gaps at the back. In the 90th minute, Bruno Guimarães exploited this space, firing a deflected shot past the goalkeeper to double Newcastle’s lead and secure all three points.
Implications for the Top-Four Race
This victory elevates Newcastle to 66 points, three ahead of Chelsea, who now sit fifth. With only two matches remaining, Newcastle’s Champions League qualification is within reach, especially considering their superior goal difference. Chelsea, on the other hand, faces mounting pressure to secure maximum points in their remaining fixtures to keep their top-four hopes alive.

Managerial Reactions
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praised his team’s performance, highlighting their tactical discipline and resilience. “The lads executed the game plan perfectly, pressing high and capitalizing on opportunities,” Howe remarked post-match.
Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca expressed disappointment over the result and Jackson’s dismissal. “It’s a learning moment for Nicolas. We need to maintain composure in high-stakes matches,” Maresca stated, emphasizing the importance of discipline as the season concludes.
Looking Ahead
Newcastle will aim to maintain their momentum as they face Arsenal and Everton in their final fixtures. Chelsea, meanwhile, must regroup quickly with upcoming matches against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, as well as preparing for their UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis on May 28.
This result not only underscores Newcastle’s resurgence under Eddie Howe but also intensifies the battle for Champions League qualification as the Premier League season approaches its climax.

His third arrived via a trademark chipped finish after being slipped clean through on the goalkeeper. Finally, at 6-1, Lionel Messi capped the rout with a signature masterpiece: a sublime free-kick from the edge of the area.
Inter Miami brought an emphatic end to their recent slump ahead of Kily Gonzalez taking the managerial reins. In contrast, Messi, the leading marksman in MLS, took another step towards the landmark of 1,000 career goals, lifting his elite-level tally to 927.
