Labour Commission to Meet NIA 0ver Conditions Of Service

Published

on

The National Labour Commission (NLC) is scheduled to meet with leaders of the National Identification Authority (NIA) and other relevant stakeholders on Thursday, May 14, 2026, to arbitrate ongoing labour concerns.

In an earlier statement, the union members across the country were directed not to report to work from midnight on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, until further notice.

Speaking in an interview on News Feed on Channel One TV, the Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate of the NIA, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, said notices have been served on NIA management, union leadership, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and all relevant stakeholders to engage on conditions of service.

“The National Labour Commission yesterday [Tuesday, May 13] issued summons inviting the management of the National Identification Authority, the leadership of the union, the local union, and then the mother union, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and then the Finance Ministry.

“The summons, or the invitation, was expected on May 20, but now there’s another letter from the National Labour Commission bringing it to Thursday, May 14, 2026. They want to see all the parties so they can arbitrate,” he said.

He said some of their offices are operating as a result of the National Labour Commission’s directive.

He further apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured affected customers that operations will fully resume on Thursday, following the strike action.

“As we speak, some of our offices are working as a result of the directive by the National Labour Commission, because after the invitation, they are directed that the strike is called off.

“We anticipate that all our officers will be at their posts and able to serve the good people of Ghana. And so for today [May 13], those who turn up in our offices and were unable to get our services, we apologise for the inconvenience caused.

“We assure them that we are putting in place measures to ensure that our services are not disrupted,” Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas assured.

Voxy Driver In Viral Video Jailed For Careless Driving

Published

on

A Toyota Voxy driver who was captured on video has been sentenced to two months’ imprisonment in hard labour by the La Motor Court for flouting traffic regulations.

In addition, Richard Agyarko was ordered to pay a fine of 260 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢3,120.00.

In default, he would serve 15 days more behind bars, the Court, presided over by Madam Adwoa Sakyi Asamadu, ruled.

Agyarko was charged with driving on the wrong side of the road, causing road obstruction, causing danger to other road users, careless and inconsiderate driving.

The convict, whose video went viral, leading to his arrest, admitted all the offences and was convicted on his own plea.

Police said the driver was captured in a viral video driving dangerously along the Kumasi Accra highway and endangering the lives of other road users.

The prosecution said Agyarko was driving a Toyota Voxy vehicle with registration number EN 551-26 and was arrested following investigations by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) after the video went viral.

He was arraigned on May 8, 2026, and pleaded guilty to all charges.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to enforcing road traffic laws, warning motorists against reckless driving, which continued to pose a serious threat to public safety, prosecution said.

It urged motorists to drive responsibly and comply with all road traffic regulations to help protect lives and property.

Five Arrested For Destroying NDC Office Project In Ellembelle

Published

on

Five persons have been arrested and remanded into police custody over the alleged destruction of a National Democratic Congress (NDC) office building under construction in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

The destruction, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of May 7, saw the assailants wielding guns and machetes as they demolished portions of the facility estimated to cost about GH¢1 million.

Speaking to Citi News, the NDC Constituency Communications Officer, Kwesi Hanson, said the party remains resolute and will continue construction of the office complex.

“We have mobilised the contractors to come on site following the incident. We had to organise some materials for the construction. Investigations are still ongoing, so we are anticipating that by the time they are done, we will have a full report on whatever transpired and who these people were,” he said.

Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive for Ellembelle, Joseph Armah Agyekum has condemned the incident, describing the action as unlawful and unacceptable.

He stressed that no individual or group had the authority to pull down any structure except through lawful means sanctioned by the courts or the District Security Council (DISEC), which he chairs.

According to the DCE, the disputed land was purchased in 2017 by the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, from the late Chief Nana Boadi at a reported cost of GH¢20,000 per plot.

However, after the chief’s death, the Awiaso royal family challenged the legitimacy of the sale, insisting the land had not been properly transferred.

Mr Agyekum said the matter was initially taken to court but was later withdrawn for settlement through an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process.

He explained that in a bid to avoid prolonged litigation, the NDC agreed to repay for the land and also accepted conditions set by the royal family, including the employment of local youth on the project, support for the construction of a palace, and payment of annual royalties.

The DCE alleged that after a Memorandum of Understanding had been signed, the royal family introduced an additional demand that the NDC and the MP facilitate the gazetting of King Kaku Aka III as Overlord of Nzema land.

According to him, the demand fell outside the authority of both the party and the MP. He further claimed the structure had been targeted on previous occasions since construction works began.

Ashanti Region: Mahama Cuts Sod For 1,000-Unit Green City Housing Project

Published

on

President John Dramani Mahama has officially cut the sod for the construction of the Green City Project at Dedesua in the Ashanti Region.

The project, situated on a 200-acre land, is expected to deliver 1,067 residential units aimed at providing affordable housing for Ghanaians.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President acknowledged Ghana’s housing deficit, which is estimated at more than 1.5 million units. He attributed the situation to years of inadequate planning, rising land values, escalating construction costs and limited access to long-term financing.

He also expressed concern about the increasing growth of slums and rapid urbanisation, noting that many people continue to live in substandard housing conditions. According to him, Ghana’s housing crisis could worsen significantly if urgent interventions are not implemented.

President Mahama emphasised his administration’s commitment to providing decent and affordable housing to improve public health, strengthen educational outcomes, boost productivity and stabilise communities.

As part of efforts to address the housing deficit, he disclosed that the government is prioritising the completion of the Saglemi Housing Project while also rolling out new social housing initiatives across districts to reduce financial barriers to home ownership.

“A nation that is seeking development must house its people with dignity. We are therefore implementing a comprehensive housing agenda that addresses supply, improves affordability, strengthens tenant protection, and reforms housing finance to reflect the reality of Ghanaian incomes,” he said.
