GPRTU To Reduce Transport Fares By 15% Effective May 25

Published

on

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 25, 2025.

This decision follows a meeting between the Union’s National Executive and the Minister of Transport.

The Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abbas Ibrahim Moro, confirmed the development in an interview with 3news.

“We just had a meeting with the Minister of Transport and we have agreed that effective Saturday, May 25, transport fares must be reduced by 15%,” he disclosed.

According to him, the fare adjustment is a direct response to an 18% drop in fuel prices.

He explained that although the Union typically applies a third of the fuel price decrease, they have opted for a 15% cut this time to ease the burden on passengers.

“We normally use one-third of the fuel price reduction to adjust fares, but we opted for 15% this time to reflect the fuel price trend. We also expect our counterparts in the spare parts industry to follow suit and reduce their prices,” he noted.

He added, “We want to place on record that we did not wait for the other components of our cost build-up to reduce before the 15% reduction.”

He also warned that GPRTU members who refuse to implement the fare cut will face consequences, adding that “If your union has decided, you have no option but to comply.”

Disconnections: GBC, GWL have not complied with payment plan – ECG

Published

on

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has justified its disconnection of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) from the national power grid, citing persistent failure to honour payment agreements.

The action, taken on Tuesday, June 17, forms part of ECG’s ongoing nationwide revenue mobilisation and disconnection exercise targeting public and private institutions with outstanding electricity bills.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, ECG’s Acting General Manager of Operations, Ishmael Tetteh Oku, said both entities were given ample notice but failed to comply with agreed payment terms.

“We have given them enough notice. The amount for GBC is over GH¢8 million, and that of Ghana Water Limited is GH¢999 million. These are long-standing arrears,” he stated.

He explained that ECG had engaged both institutions repeatedly and reached payment arrangements that were ultimately not honoured.

“For Ghana Water, we have disconnected their headquarters and all their administrative offices, except the pumping station, because we are looking at the interest of the general masses. Once you put out the pumping station, it means the nation will not have water,” he said.

Mr. Oku noted that while ECG is mindful of the public interest and essential services, the company must act to recover revenues needed to sustain power supply.

“In fact, we are not happy to disconnect any customer, but when the need arises, we have no choice,” he added.

ECG says the move is part of a broader effort to address persistent non-payment challenges and boost financial stability across the power sector.

Assemblies begin removing unauthorized billboards amid NRSA ultimatum

Published

on

Some assemblies in the Greater Accra Region have begun removing unauthorised billboards following a 21-day ultimatum from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), which threatened legal action for noncompliance.

The NRSA had directed all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to take down billboards mounted along road medians by June 2, 2025, citing safety concerns for both motorists and pedestrians.

In an interview with Citi News on Tuesday, June 17, Head of Communications at the NRSA, Pearl Adusu Gyasi, confirmed that while some assemblies have complied with the directive, others have requested an extension to engage with advertising companies before removing the billboards.

“After the deadline, we wrote to the Greater Accra Regional Council, so they invited all the MMDAs. Some of them are in preparation to remove  the unauthorised billboards from their jurisdiction, others have  asked for an extension of the deadline so that they can meet with the advertisers and remove them,” she said.

Danyame assault: Case docket on 11 soldiers sent to AG for review

Published

on

The case docket involving 11 military personnel suspected to be linked to the alleged assault of three civilians at Danyame, a suburb of Kumasi, has been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office in the Ashanti Region for review.

This development was revealed during a court hearing on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

The incident, which occurred on March 28, 2025, involved the arrest of three men: Kwame Adu, also known as Ogee, Kwabena Sarfo, and Christian Obiri Yeboah, popularly known as Kofi Yesu.

The victims were reportedly apprehended by uniformed military personnel and taken to the 4th Infantry Battalion (4BN) barracks in Kumasi, where they were allegedly subjected to brutal assault. Two of the men later died from injuries sustained during the ordeal.

The arrests were made after allegations that the three persons had stolen an iPhone belonging to a civilian.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution, supported by military intelligence, disclosed that the suspects were not being held in the military guardroom as earlier suggested.

They therefore prayed the court to reconsider its decision and remand the accused persons into police custody instead.

Additionally, the prosecution expressed concern over delays in producing the accused persons in court.

Ekume Emmanuel Mawuli Esq., sitting as a district magistrate at the Suame District Court, cautioned the military command to strictly adhere to the court’s directives regarding the custody location of the accused; otherwise, he would be forced to remand them into police custody.

The case has been adjourned to July 3, 2025.
