Aston Villa 4-2 Liverpool: Villa Humble Reds To Secure Champions League Qualification

Published

on

Aston Villa secured Champions League football with a 4-2 win over Liverpool on Friday that leaves the Reds still at risk of missing out on Europe’s elite competition next season.

Ollie Watkins struck twice as Villa boss Unai Emery was rewarded for naming a strong side just days before the Europa League final.

Liverpool slipped to fifth and remain just four points ahead of Bournemouth, who have two games remaining.

Even if the Reds do limp over the line to Champions League qualification, the manner of another dismal defeat raised fresh questions over Arne Slot’s future.

The Liverpool boss has remained confident he will be in charge next season despite a desperately disappointing title defence.

Slot was again hampered by a lengthy injury list, with Alisson Becker, Alexander Isak, and Hugo Ekitike absent, while Florian Wirtz and Mohamed Salah were only fit enough to come off the bench.

But Liverpool collapsed alarmingly in the second half just when they had got back into the game thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s equaliser.

Emery learned his lesson after a second-string side were booed off and beaten by struggling Tottenham ahead of Villa’s Europa League semi-final, second leg against Nottingham Forest.

The Spaniard named what many expect to be his starting line-up for Wednesday’s final against Freiburg in Istanbul as Villa aim to win a major trophy for the first time in 30 years.

A brilliantly worked short corner routine teed up Morgan Rogers to curl in the opening goal four minutes before half-time.

Liverpool responded after the break as Van Dijk headed in from Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick.

Moments later, the visitors were inches away from taking the lead when Rio Ngumoha rattled the inside of the post.

But momentum swung back decisively in Villa’s favour when Szoboszlai slipped deep inside his own half, allowing Rogers to cross for Watkins to tap in.

Wave upon wave of Villa attack then raged towards the Liverpool goal.

Emi Buendia’s curling effort then came back off the crossbar.

Liverpool failed to clear the resulting corner, and Watkins pounced for his second goal, despite a fine double save from Giorgi Mamardashvili to deny Youri Tielemans and Pau Torres.

A sensational strike from captain John McGinn that found the top corner rounded off a night to remember for Villa, as they are set for just a second season in Europe’s top competition since 1982/83.

Van Dijk nodded in another consolation in stoppage time for Liverpool.

But should Bournemouth shock Manchester City on Tuesday, Liverpool face the prospect of a nervy final day at home to Brentford to ensure they do not miss out on the Champions League.

Julian Alvarez To PSG: A €150 Million Blockbuster

Published

on

Paris Saint-Germain are making a bold move for Julian Alvarez. ‘AS’ reveals that Mateu Alemany has initiated talks with the French club’s board, who are prepared to table an offer of up to €150 million to secure the Argentine from Atletico Madrid.

What once seemed like a distant dream for Barcelona could soon become a reality for PSG. The French giants have the financial clout to tempt both Julian Álvarez and Atlético Madrid into agreeing to a record-breaking transfer. If completed, this deal would mark the most expensive sale in Atletico’s history.

On Thursday, ‘AS’ reported that PSG have taken significant steps to sign the man nicknamed the ‘Spider’, with serious negotiations already underway. Atletico’s Mateu Alemany is spearheading discussions over the potential summer transfer of Julian Alvarez.

The saga is layered with multiple interests. Atletico’s director of football had previously attempted to sign Kang-in Lee in January, while Goncalo Ramos remains on their radar. Furthermore, the strong relationship between former Atletico owner Miguel Angel Gil Marin and PSG’s Qatari leadership has facilitated smooth communication. At the Metropolitano, there is an understanding that if Alvarez decides to leave, negotiating with a financially dominant club like PSG would be preferable, especially as it avoids strengthening domestic rivals such as Barcelona.

According to ‘AS’, Atletico have made it clear that Julian Alvarez will not be sold for less than €100 million. The Argentine, who joined from Manchester City for €75 million, would only be available for offers starting in the nine-figure range. The final deal is expected to reach €140-150 million, a sum that would be difficult for Atletico to refuse.

Atletico’s record-breaking sale

If completed, this transfer would eclipse Atletico’s previous record sale of €120 million for Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona in 2019. Other notable departures include Lucas Hernandez to Bayern Munich for €80 million, Rodri to Manchester City for €70 million, Joao Felix to Chelsea for €52 million, and both Thomas Partey to Arsenal and Matheus Cunha to Wolves for €50 million each.

The negotiations for Kang-in Lee and Goncalo Ramos are separate from the monumental Alvarez deal. For Luis Enrique, Alvarez would be a marquee addition to PSG’s squad. For Atletico, it would represent a massive, albeit bittersweet, financial windfall. Despite facing criticism at times, the ‘Spider’ has been Diego Simeone’s most influential player over the last two seasons, amassing 49 goals and 17 assists in 106 appearances for the ‘Rojiblancos’.

Real Madrid 2-0 Real Oviedo: Mbappé Whistled As White Angels Beat Oviedo

Published

on

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé was whistled by fans at the Santiago Bernabéu in his team’s 2-0 win over Real Oviedo on Thursday in LaLiga.

The Frenchman returned from a thigh injury as a substitute for Los Blancos, who will finish a second straight season without a major trophy after Barcelona were crowned league champions last week.

Madrid, without Mbappé, lost the Clásico at Camp Nou on Sunday to confirm Hansi Flick’s side as the title winners.

Their top goal scorer, Mbappe, has come in for heavy criticism from the club’s fans in recent weeks for a perceived lack of commitment to the cause.

Gonzalo Garcia opened the scoring for second-place Madrid before half-time, and Jude Bellingham added the second in a routine victory over relegated Oviedo at a stadium with thousands of empty seats.

Alvaro Arbeloa, whose future as Madrid coach is poised to end, began with Mbappe and England international Bellingham on the bench.

Franco Mastantuono forced an early save from Aaron Escandell in what proved Madrid’s best opening for most of the first period. At the other end, Nacho Vidal smashed over after a good move from the visitors.

Madrid winger Vinicius Junior, who was also the target of some whistles, had a shot blocked and then fired the rebound into the side-netting. Madrid edged ahead with a tidy finish by Garcia shortly before the interval after Brahim Diaz fired a low pass his way in the box.

Escandell tipped over a Diaz drive and then saved from Alvaro Carreras at the near post in the second half. Vidal missed another fine chance for Oviedo, dragging his shot across goal and wide.

Arbeloa sent on Mbappe, who was whistled by Madrid’s fans, particularly unhappy at his recent holiday to Sardinia while recovering from injury. Mbappe, who scored 41 goals in 41 games across all competitions this season before this game, tried his best to smile it off.

Many Los Blancos players have been jeered by Madrid supporters over the years, including Mbappe’s idol Cristiano Ronaldo. Madrid president Florentino Perez this week called elections during a tumultuous period for the club.

Stewards took away a banner from fans reading “Florentino go now”, with opinion split over the Madrid chief. Bellingham added the second for Madrid after creating some space for himself and drilling hard and low past Escandell from just inside the box.

It settled this match but Madrid’s problems will not be solved as easily. Elsewhere, Girona drew 1-1 against Real Sociedad to climb up to 15th, still just one point above the relegation zone.

Mid-table sides Valencia and Rayo Vallecano also drew 1-1 but are not completely safe from the specter of relegation.

OFFICIAL: Real Madrid Calls Presidential Elections

Published

on

Real Madrid officially announced on Thursday the call for presidential elections. Florentino Perez and other candidates have until May 23 to submit their candidacies.

The electoral challenge for Florentino Perez begins. On Thursday, Real Madrid formalized the announcement of elections made by the president during his press conference, officially opening the window for candidacy submissions.

Both Perez and those wishing to challenge him at the polls have until May 23 to formalize their candidacies. Enrique Riquelme, CEO of the energy group Cox, recently published a letter acknowledging that the current president has left little time to prepare, but he will announce in the coming days whether he will participate in this election.

The final stages of the process will depend on the number of candidates. If there is more than one, elections will be held, and the Electoral Board will announce the date and location of the vote. It is estimated that the elections could take place on June 7, allowing time for an electoral campaign.

On the other hand, if Florentino Perez is the sole candidate, the Real Madrid president will be re-elected in the days following the deadline for the sixth consecutive time. This would extend his mandate until 2030, marking 27 years at the helm of the club, including his first term from 2000 to 2006 and his current tenure, which began in 2009 after succeeding Ramon Calderon and interim president Vicente Boluda.

Members will be able to check their inclusion or exclusion in the electoral roll between May 14 and May 18, inclusive, either through the online member services office or at the stadium, with uninterrupted hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Madrid time). Additionally, if elections are held, postal voting will be made available for those who require it.
