The Stars Who Will Miss The 2026 World Cup
The World Cup remains the ultimate stage in football, yet even the game’s biggest names are never guaranteed a place. Every edition leaves behind high-profile absentees, whether due to failed qualification campaigns, injuries or fierce competition within national teams.
The 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, will introduce a historic 48-team format.
With the line-up now complete following the final qualification matches, anticipation is building for what promises to be the biggest edition yet.
However, despite the expanded field, several major stars will not feature. Some have fallen short in qualification, others have been undone by injuries or collective underperformance. The absence of such names is always one of the tournament’s harsh realities.
Here is a selection of 20 notable players who will miss the 2026 World Cup:
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Georgia
Despite a promising start in qualifying, Georgia fell short in a tough group featuring Spain and Turkey. A major disappointment for one of Europe’s brightest attacking talents.

Victor Osimhen, Nigeria
Nigeria once again underperformed in qualification, missing out after a play-off defeat to Congo. Osimhen is one of the biggest names absent from the tournament.

Ademola Lookman, Nigeria
Alongside Osimhen, Lookman also misses out due to Nigeria’s failure, denying him a chance to shine on the global stage.

Dusan Vlahovic, Serbia
Serbia’s inconsistency proved costly, with dropped points in key matches ultimately ruling them out of the World Cup.

Jan Oblak, Slovenia
Slovenia finished behind Switzerland and Kosovo in their group, falling short of qualification despite Oblak’s presence.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Hungary
Hungary came close but failed to advance from a competitive group, meaning Szoboszlai misses out on what could have been his first World Cup.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, Italy
Italy’s struggles continue, missing a third consecutive World Cup after another play-off defeat, extending a historic crisis.

Sandro Tonali, Italy
Like Donnarumma, Tonali is another major casualty of Italy’s ongoing decline on the international stage.

Robert Lewandowski, Poland
Poland were eliminated by Sweden in a tight play-off, potentially denying Lewandowski one of his final World Cup appearances.

Piotr Zielinski, Poland
Zielinski also misses out following Poland’s narrow elimination, despite a strong overall campaign.
Rasmus Hojlund, Denmark
Denmark fell in the play-off final on penalties, leaving Hojlund without a World Cup opportunity.

Christian Eriksen, Denmark
Eriksen shares the same fate, missing out after Denmark’s dramatic elimination.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, Ukraine
Ukraine were eliminated in the play-offs, with Zinchenko also sidelined by injury at a crucial moment.

Leon Bailey, Jamaica
Jamaica came agonisingly close but lost in the intercontinental play-off final, missing a historic qualification.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon
Gabon’s run ended in the African play-offs, denying Aubameyang another appearance on the world stage.

Alexis Sanchez, Chile
Chile endured a disastrous qualifying campaign, finishing bottom and confirming their ongoing decline.

Milan Skriniar, Slovakia
Slovakia were knocked out in the play-off semi-finals after a high-scoring defeat to Kosovo.

Vangelis Pavlidis, Greece
Greece failed to qualify after finishing behind stronger opposition in their group.

Bryan Mbeumo, Cameroon
Cameroon were eliminated in the African play-offs, falling short of another World Cup appearance.

Vedat Muriqi, Kosovo
Kosovo’s dream ended in the play-off final, narrowly missing out on a historic qualification.

Despite the tournament’s expansion, the 2026 World Cup will once again be defined not only by those who make it, but also by the stars who are left behind.

LaLiga: Guard of Honor Talk Gives Way To High-Stakes Clasico Intrigue
Real Madrid’s victory has silenced the whispers about the guard of honor, but it sets the stage for a seismic ‘Clasico’ in which the hosts could achieve a historic first: clinching the La Liga title against their fiercest rivals.
Football thrives on debate, and the discourse surrounding Real Madrid’s trip to Cornella was no exception. Supporters were torn: was it better to win and stifle the ‘guard of honor’ narrative or suffer a defeat that would hand the title to their eternal rivals, only to witness them seal the title in their faces? In Barcelona, opinions were equally split between those craving an immediate coronation and those relishing the chance to celebrate ‘in the faces’ of their rivals. The debate, as ever, remains relentless.
The coming week promises more of the same, with the Clasico viewed through starkly different lenses. The league leaders are eager to secure their second consecutive title of the Flick era on home soil, savoring the prospect of a trophy lift in the presence of Vinicius, Valverde, and Tchouameni.
Conversely, the visitors will be desperate to spoil the party currently being orchestrated across the Catalan capital. While the La Liga title remains a mathematical pipe dream for Real Madrid, pride is a powerful motivator. They head to the Camp Nou determined to delay the inevitable and avoid the indignity of serving as unwanted guests at a title celebration.

Neutrality aside, we are on the verge of a historic milestone in La Liga history: never before has one of Spain’s two titans mathematically secured the championship during a Clásico. It is a statistical anomaly that in nearly a century of top-flight football, this feat has remained unachieved. Should FC Barcelona take points from Arbeloa’s side, the trophy is theirs.
While a Clásico is always an intense and thrilling affair, Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Espanyol has injected a fresh layer of drama into next Sunday’s showdown at the Camp Nou. Regardless of the result, the encounter now carries far greater weight than if the title race had already been a foregone conclusion.

Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid: Raphinha Brace Inspires Catalans To Super Cup Victory
Barcelona edged past Real Madrid in a five-goal thriller to win back-to-back Spanish Super Cup finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
It marked a 16th triumph in the tournament for Hansi Flick’s side, with Barcelona also beating Los Blancos in last year’s final.
Brazilian forward Raphinha’s floated shot in the 73rd minute proved to be the winner after a frantic ending to the first half.
Three quick-fire goals in first-half stoppage time put the two on level terms at the break after Raphinha had opened the scoring, drilling into the bottom corner in the 36th minute.
Vinicius Jr equalised two minutes into three of added time, nutmegging Jules Kounde on a brilliant run before sliding into the far corner to score his first Real goal in 17 games, since 4 October, 2025.
Robert Lewandowski then clipped in off the post to restore Barca’s lead in the 49th minute.
But Gonzalo Garcia hooked in three minutes later after a scramble in the box that saw Dean Huijsen’s header hit the bar, as Barca boss Flick protested the the half-time whistle should already have been blown.
Frenkie de Jong was shown a straight red card in stoppage time after lunging in on Kylian Mbappe, who came on as a substitute having recovered from a knee injury.
Late chances at both ends made for a nervy finale with Marcus Rashford shooting wide when clear, while Alvaro Carreras and then Raul Asencio both shot straight at goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
But Barca held on to secure a second consecutive title for the first time since 2011.
In-form Barca start 2026 with silverware
Barcelona have now won 10 games in a row, last suffering defeat in November when they lost to Chelsea in the Champions League.
They have not lost to Spanish opposition since 26 October when Real beat them in the El Clasico at the Bernabeu.
Victory provides a first piece of silverware in what could turn into a fruitful season for Flick’s men, who sit four points clear of Real at the top of La Liga.
This was the fourth Clasico Super Cup in a row, while all three of Barca’s final wins under Flick have come against Real – two Super Cups and the Copa del Rey.
German boss Flick himself has now won all eight finals he has been involved in, including five with Bayern Munich.
For Los Blancos it has been a patchy season with four wins in their last six La Liga matches.
Inconsistency in the league and in Europe has not met the lofty expectations of the club and fanbase with questions raised over Xabi Alonso’s future in Madrid.
That pressure on the Spaniard seems to have slowly alleviated with five consecutive wins in all competitions, but this result could lead to those questions resurfacing.
The four-team Spanish Super Cup has been hosted in Saudi Arabia since 2020 and the Spanish Football Federation have extended the deal to continue to play it in the country until 2029.
