Suspect Arrested With Arms And Ammunition In Joint Police-Military Operation In Nkwanta

Published

on

A joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces on Friday, August 1, 2025, has led to the arrest of a suspect found in possession of firearms and ammunition in Nkwanta.

The intelligence-led raid targeted individuals believed to be involved in the recent violent rioting activities that have plagued Nkwanta and its immediate environs.

The operation commenced at approximately 6:15 PM (1815 hours), based on credible intelligence.

The combined police and military team swiftly moved to a location opposite King’s Filling Station Down, an area reportedly known for suspected criminal activities.

To ensure the safety of residents and prevent any escape attempts, the area was immediately cordoned off.

A thorough search of the premises by the security personnel resulted in the discovery and retrieval of two (2) single-barrel guns and four (4) AAA ammunition from the room of the suspect, identified as Francis Donkor, aged 50.

Francis Donkor was promptly arrested on the spot and has since been escorted to the Police Station, where he is currently in custody, assisting with ongoing investigations into the violent unrest.

The retrieved firearms and ammunition have been retained as crucial evidence to support the investigation and potential prosecution.

This arrest comes amidst a backdrop of escalating tensions and sporadic violent clashes in Nkwanta, a town in the Oti Region.

The Nkwanta South Municipality, in particular, has experienced intermittent chieftaincy and land disputes, often leading to outbreaks of violence, destruction of property, and displacement of residents.

These conflicts, though seemingly localised, have historically posed significant security challenges, requiring repeated intervention from state security agencies.

In recent months, there have been reports of increased communal violence, including instances of rioting and the unlawful discharge of firearms.

The presence of illegal weapons often fuels these clashes, making effective disarmament crucial for lasting peace.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and public safety in the region.

The law enforcement body also issued a strong caution to the public against the unlawful possession and use of firearms.

Under Ghanaian law, unauthorised possession of firearms and ammunition is a serious offence, carrying significant penalties.

The ongoing operation signals the resolve of security forces to neutralise threats posed by armed individuals and restore order in affected communities.

The police have indicated that investigations are ongoing, and further details will be provided as they become available.

This arrest is expected to contribute to efforts to de-escalate the violence and bring perpetrators of unrest in Nkwanta to justice.

Over 10 Students Arrested Over Okuapeman-Mount Sinai SHS Clash

Published

on

More than 10 students have been apprehended in connection with the clashes between Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The arrests follow reprisal attacks between students of the two schools, which resulted in the burning and destruction of several structures on both campuses in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, September 2, Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Owusu-Bempah, said some of the students fled their schools when the police arrived. Still, he warned that their absence would not prevent the police from arresting them.

“We have apprehended them. And there are more,” he said, adding that the police are compiling a comprehensive list of all persons involved in the violence.

He disclosed that the investigation had also uncovered information suggesting that some teachers may have encouraged students to attack their counterparts.

According to him, the police have obtained the names of teachers allegedly linked to the incident and will take action against them if investigations establish their involvement.

“We have the names of the teachers. They have nowhere to go. At the appropriate time, we will arrest all of them, and their names will be published,” DCOP Owusu-Bempah warned.

DCOP Owusu-Bempah assured the public that anyone found to have participated in the violence would be dealt with in accordance with the law, while urging students to return to school and cooperate with the investigation.

He also appealed against any interference in the police process, warning that such actions could undermine efforts to restore calm and ensure accountability.

At Okuapeman SHS, six students were injured and taken to hospital following the incident. The school’s Headmaster said four of the students had since been treated and discharged, while two remained on admission as of Wednesday.

The exact trigger for the clashes remains unclear, but the police have begun investigations to establish what led to the confrontation and identify all those responsible.
