Bekwai: Two Men Sentenced to Prison For Robbery
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has secured the conviction and sentencing of two individuals for robbery and related offenses following thorough investigations and successful prosecution at the Bekwai Circuit Court.
The convicts are Francis Oppong, also known as Kwame Abuu, a resident of Kyekyewere near Obuasi, and Francis Nyamekye, also known as Amearo. Both were found guilty after a full trial.
They were first put before the Bekwai Circuit Court on 30th January 2024 on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, aiding and abetment of robbery, and robbery, contrary to Sections 23(1), 20(1), and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
On 5th January 2026, the Court, presided over by His Honour Mr Isaac Appeatu Esq., convicted the two and sentenced Francis Oppong to fifteen (15) years imprisonment with hard labour, while Francis Nyamekye was sentenced to twenty-five (25) years imprisonment with hard labour. Both convicts have since been transferred to the Kumasi Central Prison to commence their sentences.
The convictions stem from a robbery incident that occurred on 16th December 2023 at Kyekyewere near Obuasi, involving a small-scale miner. Investigations established that the convicts, together with accomplices currently at large, planned and executed the robbery at the victim’s residence and mining site. The accused, Francis Oppong, who lived in the same vicinity as the complainant, was found to have monitored the victim’s movements and relayed information to the robbery gang.
During the attack, the victim was assaulted and sustained injuries, while the robbers made away with a pump action gun, a Huawei mobile phone valued at GH¢1,200, eighteen pounds of gold valued at about GH¢100,000, and cash amounting to GH¢2,000. Further intelligence later led to the arrest of Francis Nyamekye at a private hospital in Obuasi while he was seeking medical treatment after sustaining gunshot injuries during a failed robbery attempt.
Police investigations culminated in the successful prosecution of the two convicts, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining accomplices still at large to face justice.

Over 10 Students Arrested Over Okuapeman-Mount Sinai SHS Clash
More than 10 students have been apprehended in connection with the clashes between Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The arrests follow reprisal attacks between students of the two schools, which resulted in the burning and destruction of several structures on both campuses in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, September 2, Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Owusu-Bempah, said some of the students fled their schools when the police arrived. Still, he warned that their absence would not prevent the police from arresting them.
“We have apprehended them. And there are more,” he said, adding that the police are compiling a comprehensive list of all persons involved in the violence.
He disclosed that the investigation had also uncovered information suggesting that some teachers may have encouraged students to attack their counterparts.
According to him, the police have obtained the names of teachers allegedly linked to the incident and will take action against them if investigations establish their involvement.
“We have the names of the teachers. They have nowhere to go. At the appropriate time, we will arrest all of them, and their names will be published,” DCOP Owusu-Bempah warned.
DCOP Owusu-Bempah assured the public that anyone found to have participated in the violence would be dealt with in accordance with the law, while urging students to return to school and cooperate with the investigation.
He also appealed against any interference in the police process, warning that such actions could undermine efforts to restore calm and ensure accountability.
At Okuapeman SHS, six students were injured and taken to hospital following the incident. The school’s Headmaster said four of the students had since been treated and discharged, while two remained on admission as of Wednesday.
The exact trigger for the clashes remains unclear, but the police have begun investigations to establish what led to the confrontation and identify all those responsible.
