Tidal Wave Collapses 13 Houses In Moree; Over 80 Rendered Homeless

Published

on

A strong tidal wave has destroyed 13 houses in the coastal community of Moree in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region, rendering more than 80 residents homeless.

The Central Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed that the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, around 0300 hours.

A statement issued by NADMO said there were no casualties despite the extensive damage caused by the tidal surge.

It said officers stationed in the area received a distress call reporting collapsed buildings, loss of property, and disruption of livelihoods following the incident.

The statement said personnel from NADMO, National Security, the Ghana Police Service, and the District Assembly responded promptly to the situation to safeguard lives and property.

According to NADMO, the responding teams conducted rapid assessments and provided temporary shelter for displaced persons.

“The state of the sea is still rough,” the statement cautioned, urging residents to remain calm as efforts are intensified to ensure their safety.

NADMO expressed sympathy to affected residents and assured the public that measures were being put in place to support those displaced by the disaster.

The incident highlights recurring coastal hazards in some parts of the Central region, where communities continue to experience tidal waves and erosion.

Local authorities and disaster management officials have called for long-term interventions, including coastal protection infrastructure and intensified public education, to mitigate future risks.

Further updates are expected as assessments continue and relief efforts are scaled up.

Two Brothers Drown While Attempting To Rescue Sibling In Abandoned Quarry Pit At Akatsi

Published

on

Two brothers have drowned in an abandoned quarry pit at Live Donorkope in the Akatsi South Municipality after attempting to rescue their younger brother.

The deceased were identified as Felix Dogbey, 18, a Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduate, and Christian Dogbey, 25, an employee of a food processing company at Asikuma.

The Akatsi South Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Daniel Gidi, told the Ghana News Agency that the incident occurred on May 15 at about 1600 hours.

He said the deceased, together with about nine relatives, had travelled to Live Donorkope for a funeral, where their mother resides, and later visited the abandoned quarry lake for recreation without the supervision of residents in the area.

Mr Gidi said the tragedy began when the brothers’ nine-year-old sibling, Eric Dogbey, started drowning in the water-filled quarry pit.

“Felix, after realising that their brother was calling for help, decided to rescue him but ended up drowning after rescuing his younger brother,” he said.

He added that Christian, sensing danger, also entered the water in an attempt to rescue Felix, but both brothers drowned in the process.

Mr Gidi disclosed that the abandoned quarry pit was estimated to be between 18 and 24 metres deep.

He said initial rescue efforts by local divers on Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, proved unsuccessful.

According to him, officers from the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) at Sogakope Nutekpor were later contacted to assist with rescue operations, but had to suspend efforts on Saturday evening due to poor visibility in the water.

“We called for help from the Navy officers, who decided to continue with rescue operations Sunday morning after experiencing poor visibility on Saturday evening inside the water,” he added.

The Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive, Daniel Dagba, together with officials from NADMO and other stakeholders, visited the scene on Saturday to assess the situation.

The Assembly Member for the area, Moses Gadri, told the GNA that the deceased hailed from Akatsi Alagbokope but resided at Asikuma.

However, the bodies of the deceased were seen floating on Sunday morning before the arrival of the Navy officers.

Personnel from the Akatsi Police Command, who maintained order at the scene, later conveyed the bodies to the St. Paul’s Hospital morgue pending autopsy.

The incident has thrown the community into a state of shock and mourning.

VIDEO: Oda-Nkwanta Road Crash: MP’s Aide Killed, Three In Critical Condition

Published

on

A dark cloud has fallen over the political landscape of the Eastern Region following a horrific head-on collision on the Oda-Nkwanta road that claimed the life of Kofi Nti, the personal aide to the Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah.

The tragic incident, which occurred over the weekend, also left three other individuals with life-threatening injuries. Emergency services rushed the survivors to the hospital, where medical staff confirmed they are currently battling for their lives in critical condition.

The late Kofi Nti, a well-known and highly respected political figure in the constituency, was travelling in a pickup vehicle alongside an official party driver.

According to local reports, the team was actively traversing the constituency to monitor the ruling party’s ongoing polling station executive elections when the disaster struck at Oda Nkwanta.

The pickup collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle under circumstances that are currently being investigated by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

News of Nti’s sudden demise sent shockwaves through the Akyem Oda municipality, grinding local party activities to a halt. As the right-hand man to the Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah, who also serves as a Deputy Minister, Nti was considered a vital bridge between the MP’s office and the grassroots.

Constituents and party faithful have begun flooding social media with tributes, describing the deceased as a dedicated, humble, and hard-working young man who lost his life in service to his political community.

Police have since towed the mangled vehicles from the scene to allow for a free flow of traffic, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

This latest tragedy once again highlights the growing concerns over the safety of the Oda-Nkwanta stretch, a route that local motorists say requires urgent traffic-calming measures and improved visibility.
