Three people were given a total of 19 years in jail by the Ho Circuit Court for their roles in a violent heist that took place close to the Ho Central Market.

Mercy Sokpe, age 22, Atsu Kamasa, age 25, and Godfred Dzidonu, age 19, were found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery and were sentenced by His Honour Osman Abdul-Hakeem on Friday, May 9, 2025.

The event happened on May 4, 2025, at around 4:30 p.m., according to a statement released by DSP Felix Danku, Public Affairs Officer of the Ghana Police Service in the Volta Region. Elijah Torgbedzi, a 21-year-old victim, had his iPhone 6s, worth GH¢700, stolen by the three of them.

In a calculated action, Mercy Sokpe went up to the complainant while feigning to take a selfie with her phone. After obtaining the gadget, she gave her comrades a signal, and they used a pair of scissors to assault Mr. Torgbedzi before stealing the phone and running away.

After the victim sounded the alarm, Godfred Dzidonu was quickly apprehended and turned over to the police after being discovered in possession of the stolen phone. The remaining suspects were apprehended from their hiding places in Ho as a result of further investigations.

All three of the accused entered guilty pleas to the charges during the court hearings. Both received three-year prison sentences for conspiring to commit robbery. Furthermore, Godfred Dzidonu and Atsu Kamasa were each sentenced to five years in prison on the robbery charge.

The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to combating crime throughout the region and praised the public’s prompt response. Additionally, the Service released a public advice asking people to be vigilant and wary of strangers asking for help.

“The public is being advised by the police to be vigilant, alert, and wary of anyone who might approach them for assistance,” DSP Danku said.

The sentencing concludes a case that emphasizes the perils of opportunistic crime and the value of public watchfulness in aiding law enforcement.
