Echoes Of A Legend: Ghana Celebrates The Life And Legacy Of Daddy Lumba
Ghana is grieving. The music has quieted, and hearts are heavy following the passing of one of the nation’s most beloved icons, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, better known as Daddy Lumba. His death in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra, marked the end of a remarkable era that defined Ghanaian highlife music for over four decades.
As news of his passing spread, fans gathered outside his East Legon home. Some held radios playing his classics. Others lit candles. Many wept openly. It was more than the loss of a musician. Ghana had lost a voice that narrated its love stories, heartbreaks, hopes, and humor. His family’s statement captured the weight of the moment: “Daddy Lumba was more than a musician, he was a cultural icon whose music touched countless lives.”
Tributes have come from every corner of the country. Rapper Sarkodie posted a simple yet heartfelt message, “RIP DL! Thanks for all you’ve done for us… The legacy lives on.” On DL FM, the very station Daddy Lumba founded, journalist Serwaa Amihere broke down in tears as she called him “a father figure.” Her voice cracked as she recalled hearing his songs in her childhood home, long before she became a media personality.
Across the airwaves, his timeless hits; Aben Wo Ha, Theresa and Yentie Obiaa played on repeat. On the streets, in homes, and in taxis, his voice became a balm for national sorrow. Civil society groups like Movement for Change urged Ghanaians to keep his legacy alive, reminding us that legends never truly leave us. “His music,” they said, “is still here. So is his message.”
Born in Nsuta, Ashanti Region, in 1964, Lumba’s journey to stardom began humbly. His big break came with the Lumba Brothers and continued with his 1989 solo album, Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu. Over time, he released more than 30 albums, collaborated with dozens of artists, and influenced almost every modern Ghanaian musician in one way or another.
In 2022, he launched DL FM, a Twi-language radio station that amplified indigenous music and voices. It wasn’t just about entertainment. It was about preserving identity, promoting culture, and giving back to the community that made him a star. That same year, he was featured on King Charles III’s Commonwealth Day playlist, a moment that placed Ghanaian highlife beside global greats like Bob Marley and Beyoncé.
Even in death, Daddy Lumba’s impact is impossible to ignore. He gave Ghana more than melodies. He gave us moments, memories, and meaning. Whether it was a wedding, a heartbreak, a celebration, or a quiet night with the radio on, his voice was there.
Today, as Ghana reflects on his life, one truth remains: Daddy Lumba may be gone, but his songs live on. His music will still play at parties, soothe the brokenhearted, and remind us of who we are. The rhythm of his legacy will never fade.
