Bayern Munich Humiliate Auckland City 10–0 in Club World Cup Opener

CINCINNATI, USA – European powerhouse Bayern Munich opened their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a brutal 10–0 thrashing of New Zealand’s Auckland City at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati on Sunday night. The match, which marked the start of Group C action, saw the German champions outclass their semi-professional opponents in every department, setting multiple tournament records in the process.
Bayern came into the tournament as one of the favourites, and from the opening whistle, they wasted no time asserting dominance. Kingsley Coman etched his name into the history books by scoring the first-ever goal of the expanded 32-team Club World Cup in the 6th minute, heading home after a flick-on by Jonathan Tah.
The floodgates soon opened. Sacha Boey, Michael Olise, and Coman again found the net in rapid succession, before veteran forward Thomas Müller and another from Olise took the halftime score to 6–0. By that point, Bayern had recorded 11 shots on target to Auckland’s zero, controlling over 70% possession.
With star striker Harry Kane substituted early in the second half without a goal, it was rising star Jamal Musiala who stole the show. Introduced in the 61st minute, the 21-year-old netted a 22-minute hat-trick, including a penalty, bringing the score to 9–0. Müller added the tenth with a powerful strike in the 89th minute to round off the historic scoreline.
A Record-Breaking Night
Bayern’s 10–0 win is now the largest victory margin in FIFA Club World Cup history. The game also became the highest-scoring match in the tournament since its inception. Coman’s early goal was the first ever scored in the tournament’s expanded format.
Auckland City Overwhelmed
Auckland City, whose players include part-time teachers, estate agents, and forklift drivers, were simply no match for the Bundesliga giants. Despite their courageous effort, the Oceania champions were outclassed and failed to register a single shot on target.
What’s Next
Bayern top Group C and now turn their attention to more challenging fixtures against Boca Juniors (June 20) and Benfica (June 24). Auckland City will be desperate to bounce back and restore pride in their next outing, but their uphill battle continues.
This emphatic result is sure to ignite debates about the competitive balance in the new Club World Cup format—but for now, Bayern Munich have sent a powerful message: they mean business.
