Missing Corpse From Oda Hospital Morgue Surfaces At Suhum

Published

on

Members of the Bretuo family of Akyem Apaaso near Oda in the Eastern Region had a shock of their lives when they realized that the body they had been given at the morgue of the Oda Government Hospital and brought home for burial was not that of their relative.

They had to return the body to the morgue.

The hospital was also unable to find the body of their departed relative, 62-year-old Margaret Yaa Kyeraa, deposited at the morgue last month for burial on May 16, 2026.

One of the family members who wants to remain anonymous told The Mirror that a team of undertakers prepared the ground two weeks ago on a Friday evening, waiting for the arrival of the body for viewing before the burial.

The member said when a delegation brought the corpse from the mortuary  some family members who critically inspected the body realised it was not Yaa Kyeraa, explaining that  Yaa Kyeraa had a very low haircut, but the one brought for burial had braided hair.

On May 20, some relatives of the late Kyeraa informed this reporter that the missing body had been discovered at the morgue of the Suhum Government Hospital after investigations were conducted to determine whether her body had been mistakenly transferred there by people who had recently moved corpses from the Oda Government Hospital to Suhum.

They discovered that Kyeraa’s body had been taken to the morgue of the Suhum Government Hospital.

The family member said the widower, who had flown from Gabon, the father of the deceased, who had travelled from Asante Juaben in the Ashanti Region; and a large number of relatives who came from Kumasi to Apaaso were highly disappointed by the unfortunate development.

When contacted, the Medical Superintendent of the Oda Government Hospital, Dr Kwabena Awuku, asked the reporter to hold on with the story until he made some inquiries and efforts to find the body and described the development as unfortunate. The efforts included bringing medical experts from the Korle Bu

Teaching Hospital to conduct a DNA test on the children of Kyeraa and the rejected corpse.

On Monday, May 18, 2026, the hospital management, led by Dr Awuku, met members of the bereaved family.

Through negotiations, family members at Suhum hired a hearse to convey the corpse of Kyeraa to the morgue of the Oda Government Hospital and took away that of their relative after inspecting it to ensure it was theirs.

Meanwhile, the bereaved family of Kyeraa has fixed June 13, 2026, for her burial and final funeral rites.

When The Mirror contacted Dr Awuku on the discovery of the corpse of Kyeraa at Suhum, he refused to confirm or deny it and asked the reporter to “go and contact the family members of Kyeraa.”

Hyundai To Establish West Africa Assembly Plant In Ghana

Published

on

Ghana is set to host a Hyundai automotive manufacturing plant as South Korea expands its economic footprint in Africa, in a development expected to advance the country’s industrialization agenda and strengthen its position as a regional manufacturing hub.

The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following the 2026 Korea–Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Seoul, which he co-chaired with South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun.

According to the minister, the planned Hyundai facility will serve the West African market and is expected to boost local vehicle production, create jobs, and attract further investment into Ghana’s growing industrial sector.

“This year, our two countries will open a new university in Ghana, establish a West Africa Hyundai Automotive Manufacturing Plant in Ghana, and launch new solar irrigation systems,” Mr Ablakwa said in a statement after the meeting.

The establishment of the Hyundai plant is being viewed as a major step in Ghana’s efforts to attract manufacturing investment and reduce dependence on raw commodity exports by building value-added industries.

Beyond the automotive project, Ghana and South Korea have also agreed to deepen cooperation in sectors including artificial intelligence, energy, and critical minerals, areas seen as central to global technological and green-energy transitions.

Mr Ablakwa noted that discussions focused on strengthening a partnership anchored on industrialization, value addition, job creation, and improving Africa’s returns from global economic engagement.

The minister also highlighted the urgency of creating employment opportunities for Africa’s growing youth population, describing industrial development as a key policy priority across the continent.

South Korea’s transformation from a developing economy into a global manufacturing and technology leader continues to make it an attractive partner for African countries seeking industrial expansion and technology transfer.

Ghana and South Korea are also progressing discussions on a broader visa waiver arrangement. While visa-free travel has already been agreed upon for diplomatic and service passport holders, negotiations are ongoing to extend the arrangement to all passport categories.

The new agreements come as both countries prepare to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations next year, with the Hyundai plant and related projects seen as a significant milestone in their economic partnership.

700 More Ghanaians To Be Repatriated From South Africa On Saturday And Sunday

Published

on

Ghana is set to repatriate nearly 700 citizens from South Africa this weekend as part of ongoing efforts to assist nationals affected by xenophobic attacks in the country.

The exercise marks the second phase of the government’s evacuation program for Ghanaians seeking to return home amid growing concerns over their safety and livelihoods. The first batch included 300 Ghanaians.

Speaking on JoyPrime News Flash on Wednesday, 3 June, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, disclosed that the repatriation exercise is scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday.

According to him, arrangements have been made to facilitate the voluntary return of approximately 700 Ghanaians from South Africa.

Mr Quarshie noted that although the diplomatic mission was unable to provide accommodation for those affected, members of the Ghanaian community in South Africa had stepped in to offer support.

“We are looking at repatriating nearly 700 people on Saturday and Sunday. While we did not provide accommodation, we are grateful that Ghanaian businesses and churches have stepped in to host them,” he said.

The latest evacuation follows the successful return of an initial group of Ghanaians as the government continues to respond to reports of intimidation, attacks and hostility directed at foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.

Authorities say support measures have been put in place to assist returnees upon arrival in Ghana, including temporary relief and reintegration assistance.

The government has reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare and safety of Ghanaians both at home and abroad, as efforts continue to support citizens affected by the unrest.
