KETA: Flooding Forces Closure of Lower Primary Schools

Published

on

Due to rising water levels submerging school infrastructure and access routes, lower primary school students in the Keta Municipality’s Mamime and Lawoshime areas have been forced to stay at home due to flooding.

Residents estimate that the calamity, which was brought on by the continuous rain, has devastated thousands of cedis’ worth of homes and farmlands. Concern regarding safety and access to essential services in the area has grown as a result of the situation.
On Friday, June 27, Patience Dogbatse, a volunteer teacher in the impacted enclave, said that the temporary closure for lower grade students is a preventative step to avoid any tragedies.

“The condition here is very bad. We need urgent help. The government must do something about this,” she said.

The already precarious educational situation is being made worse by the yearly flooding issue, which deters many instructors from accepting posts to Mamime and Lawoshime, according to Dogbatse.

She added, “For now, the students in the upper primary can attend school, but the lower primary class students are not able to go due to the flood. We are also facing serious road challenges.”

Communities are extremely vulnerable during the rainy season as a result of the years-long stalling of a bridge project that was supposed to connect Mamime, Lawoshime, and other surrounding areas. Locals are now demanding that the government step in right now and provide life jackets, canoes, and better road infrastructure.
“The government needs to provide us with canoes, life jackets, and a good road,” one resident stressed.

In response to the concerns, Wisdom Seade, the Keta Municipal Chief Executive, stated that evaluations are being conducted to assist impacted households. He supported the decision to keep some students at home, saying it was an essential action to protect youngsters while rescue efforts were underway.

W/R: Police Nab 44 Suspects In Large-Scale Galamsey Operation

Published

on

In the Western Region, police have conducted a series of prearranged, intelligence-driven raids and arrested 44 persons connected to illicit mining (galamsey).

This crackdown is a component of the Western Regional Police Command’s continuous attempts to address the widespread problem of galamsey, which is a major hazard to the ecology and natural resources of the area.

The operation started in Wassa Amanten, when police conducted a surprise search and apprehended 27 people who were discovered working at unapproved mining sites.

Critical equipment, such as a tricycle, an unregistered Boxer motorcycle, several water pumping devices, and a “changfan” machine—which was later burned on the scene—was also seized by the authorities in conjunction with the arrests.

On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the police carried out two more raids in the infamous mining areas of Adamaso and Wassa Mamieso, continuing their tough stance against illicit mining.

Twelve individuals were arrested in Adamaso, including George Amoah (45), Jeremiah Adusei (37), Eric Martey (41), and Abraham Antwi (26).

During this operation, five water pumping machines were seized by the authorities.

Five more people were taken into custody by police in Wassa Mamieso, further east, close to the Mamie River: Seidu Ayigbe (30), Matthew Wofatey (20), Samuel Kwarteng (19), Stephen Tetteh (30), and Junior Simon (21).

To further their attempts to shut down illicit mining operations, police also recovered a Sunny Excavator 215 Control Board during this investigation.

These coordinated raids are part of a larger effort to stop illicit mining activities that continue to jeopardize the region’s ecosystems and water bodies, the Western Regional Police Command has reaffirmed.

The police reaffirmed their dedication to making sure that these environmental protection initiatives are not just successful but also long-lasting.

Authorities are asking residents to report suspicious activity and work with law enforcement to protect their natural resources because illegal mining is still a concern.

The Western Regional Police emphasize that they will continue to be vigilant and take decisive action to safeguard the ecosystem of the region for future generations as the struggle against galamsey escalates.

NADMO to launch nationwide building assessment following Cape Coast disaster

Published

on

In reaction to the recent collapse of five structures in Cape Coast, Central Region, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) announced its plan to begin a thorough evaluation of aging buildings across the country.

The goal of this preventative action is to safeguard public safety and prevent catastrophes in the future.

In an interview with Citi News, Richard Amo Yartey, the Director of NADMO’s Inspectorate Unit, who is in charge of distributing relief materials to Cape Coast building collapse victims, revealed these plans.

“Across the country, we don’t have structures collapsing all over the country. But then, this is an eye-opener, a wake-up call for us to start doing some assessment on very old structures which have not seen maintenance for a very long while. So that we don’t wake up to hear some of these things happening in other places in Ghana. Cape Coast is going to start, and it has to be replicated in other parts of the country to ensure that old structures that have not seen maintenance for many years do not collapse suddenly, with people dying. It’s very sad that we lost people,” Mr. Yartey stated.

According to NADMO, the number of municipalities in the Central Region that have experienced floods has alarmingly increased in the wake of the recent flooding catastrophes, going from 11 to 14 in a single day.

Over 5,000 people have been affected by flooding, according to the most recent assessment, and 124 people have been relocated as a result of recent building collapses in Cape Coast.

Districts renowned for illicit mining operations are among the recently identified sites experiencing flooding, which raises questions over the stability of the infrastructure in these areas.

Kwesi Dawood, the Central Regional NADMO Director, conveyed the urgency of the situation, stating, “The region is in distress and in need of more relief items.”

He emphasized the need for prompt assistance to people affected by recent calamities who have lost their homes and belongings.

As NADMO is ready to start its building assessment program, the organization is urging increased attention to the upkeep of older buildings nationwide, making sure that public safety is given top priority in order to stop additional fatalities.
