Presidential Jet Grounded Due to Heavy Corrosion – Defence Minister

Published

on

Minister for Defence Dr Edward Omane Boamah says Ghana’s presidential jet remains out of service due to extensive corrosion, and efforts are ongoing to restore it to flying condition.

Speaking during his turn at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, July 21, the minister confirmed that the Falcon aircraft has not returned from maintenance and expressed frustration over missed delivery deadlines.

“It is sad to note that for some time now, whenever the aircraft goes for either maintenance or repair… And in this case, as we speak, the aircraft is still not in,” he said.

“We’ve been given a date, but I don’t want to put that date out because I’ve been given too many dates which did not materialise.”

Despite the uncertainty, he expressed hope.

“We are hoping that this date that has been given, we will see the Falcon here in Ghana,” he added.

The minister revealed the extent of damage to the presidential jet, describing it as serious.

“The truth is that it is heavily corroded, and this is not the Air Force itself saying it; these are third independent parties putting out this when it was sent away,” he said. “You heard the various multiple corrosion that I listed.”

Dr Boamah stressed, however, that the jet’s condition should not justify hiring expensive private aircraft.

“That does not in any way justify hiring or renting luxurious aircraft, persistently, no way,” he said.

He assured the public that the government was reviewing the air and naval assets of the Ghana Armed Forces as part of a broader defence strategy.

“So be assured that hopefully when we are considering the air assets of the Air Force, the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Army, all these things will be considered and the right decision taken,” he said.

For now, the focus remains on getting the existing aircraft back in service. “We are focused on restoring what we have to a serviceable state so that we can make do with it,” the Minister said.

The Government Accountability series is a platform for key sector ministers to present mid-year updates and offer a preliminary assessment of the government’s performance over the past six months. And it is part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability in governance.

Ejisu MP Urges Government To Address Bad Roads

Published

on

Hon. Kwabena Boateng, the Ejisu Member of Parliament, has urged the government, via the Ministry of Roads and Highways, to make sure road contractors return to their sites immediately.

On Monday, July 21, 2025, he spoke on the floor of parliament and said that the Ashanti region’s Ejisu-Onwe-Essienimpong-Kwaso Road, Kokobra-Ekyem-Amoa-Achiase Road, and Besease Jamasi Road have turned into death traps that put pregnant women, traders, farmers, and school children in danger.

He added that most farm produce is left in the bush to rot because of the terrible state of the roads, and that communities like Ekyem, Akokoamon, and Asamang have not had asphalt roads since Ghana gained its independence.

The MP petition follows a protest on July 7, 2025, that was organized by the Concerned Drivers Union of Ejisu.

They complained about potholes that are causing miscarriages among pregnant women on the Ejisu-Onwe road.

Many drivers and locals joined the four-hour protest to voice their disapproval of the poor road systems, especially those between Onwe and Kwaso.

The Ejisu-Onwe and Achiase roads were initiated by the former Akufo Addo administration, but they were not finished before they left office.

Mr. Kwabena Boateng is pleading with the Mahama administration to finish the road projects that the previous administration initiated.

He claims that during the rainy season, most schoolchildren in the impacted communities struggle to get to class, and cars become stopped on the way to work.

Nigerian Man Arrested After Botched Robbery Leaves Mobile Money Vendor Injured In Avenor

Published

on

What started as an ordinary evening for a Mobile Money vendor in Avenor, Accra, turned into a nightmare when two armed men stormed her workplace on June 30, 2025. Riding an unregistered motorcycle, the men attacked the unsuspecting woman around 8:30 p.m., demanding her bag full of cash.

In the chaos that followed, three gunshots rang out. One of the bullets struck the vendor in the leg, leaving her bleeding and terrified. The robbers made away with her bag, which reportedly contained GH₵20,000.

But their escape did not go as planned.

A brave bystander, witnessing the incident, raised an alarm that forced the robbers to abandon their motorcycle and flee on foot. This timely intervention became a crucial break in the case.

One of the suspects, 36-year-old Emmanuel Okafor Chukwuma, a Nigerian national, was later arrested while allegedly attempting to leave the country. Investigators revealed that Chukwuma had already bought tickets in an effort to flee to Nigeria following the robbery.

Thanks to the swift work of the police and the vigilance of the community, he was taken into custody and has since been remanded by an Accra court. His next court appearance is set for July 30, 2025.

The stolen bag was recovered during the investigation, with GH₵9,000 still intact. The victim has since been reunited with her belongings, though she continues to recover from her injury.

Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, praised the public’s quick response and urged residents to stay alert and continue supporting law enforcement by reporting suspicious activity through emergency numbers 18555 or 191.

Tamale Drug Dealer Fined Gh₵1.68M, Faces 25 Years In Jail Over Tramadol Bust

Published

on

A Tamale Circuit Court, presided over by Francis Asubayere, has convicted Alhaji Abdulai Sayuti, a 53-year-old pharmaceutical distributor, and fined him GH₵1,680,000, equivalent to 14,000 penalty units, on each charge expected to run concurrently.

Alhaji Sayuti was convicted for unlawful possession of restricted drugs following an intelligence-led operation in Tamale. In default of payment, he will serve 25 years in prison.

He pleaded guilty to the charges of possessing restricted drugs and the prohibited sale of restricted drugs.

Sayuti was arrested during a crackdown on the illegal opioid trade in Tamale, where authorities discovered 447 boxes of tramadol (120mg) and 11 boxes of tramaking (120mg).

Monday’s conviction relates specifically to 336 blisters of tramadol (120mg) found on him around the Victory Cinema area.

Prosecutors are preparing to put him before the Tamale High Court in connection with the larger seizure of 447 boxes of tramadol and 11 boxes of tramaking found in a follow-up operation.

The arrest was the result of weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering by law enforcement as part of a campaign to disrupt the illicit drug supply in Tamale and surrounding areas.

The Northern Region has experienced a rise in illegal opioid use, prompting significant arrests by police and the local anti-drug task force.
