One feared dead, 3 security personnel injured in violent clashes with ‘Ghetto Boys’ at Gomoa Dominase

One man is feared dead, while three security officers—two policemen and an immigration officer—have been hospitalised following an operation to eject squatters behind the Dominase Onion Market in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.
The Gomoa East District Security Council and the Central East Regional Police Command jointly carried out a search-and-demolish operation in the community located directly behind the onion market, in response to a spate of armed robberies along the Kasoa–Winneba Highway.

It is unclear how the young man died, but he is suspected to have sneaked into one of the rooms after residents were instructed to evacuate their belongings ahead of the demolition. He was later found lying limp and bleeding on the floor of one of the structures, which enraged the squatters.
The squatters, described as ‘ghetto boys’, attacked the assembly officials and security personnel with various implements—including cutlasses, stones, and sticks—and also prevented the yet-to-be-identified man from being rushed to the hospital.

The two injured police officers and the immigration officer were initially taken to the Gomoa Potsin Polyclinic and the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital. Myjoyonline.com understands they have since been referred to the Police Hospital in Accra for further medical attention.
In their anger, the attackers destroyed two heavy-duty machines belonging to the District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP) and smashed the windshield of a police vehicle.

Earlier in the operation, security personnel had discovered drugs and offensive weapons in the possession of some of the squatters, prompting the assembly to begin the demolition exercise.

When the situation escalated into violent confrontations, all present—including the police—were forced to flee for safety. After retreating to a safe distance, officers fired warning shots in an attempt to quell the violence.

Six suspects were arrested in the operation.
Nana Adjoa Oboma, market queen of the Gomoa Akyempim Market (Dominase Onion Market), confirmed the development and said armed robbers have been terrorising commuters and market women.

Ibrahim Mahama Fully Funds Life-Saving Surgery for Toddler with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

Renowned Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist, Ibrahim Mahama, has come to the rescue of Baby Phoebe, a 1-year-7-month-old girl battling acute myeloid leukemia (AML), by covering the entire cost of her life-saving treatment abroad.
Phoebe’s mother, Victoria Amissah, had made an emotional public appeal for financial assistance to raise $78,620 for specialized treatment at the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai, India. Ghana lacks the advanced medical infrastructure to fully treat her aggressive form of blood cancer, and doctors at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital had recommended urgent care overseas.
The estimated amount was to cover three cycles of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and associated travel and accommodation costs for Phoebe and her mother.

Mr. Mahama, known for his consistent support for health and social causes, stepped in to fully fund the treatment, offering new hope to Phoebe and her family. The gesture has been met with widespread praise and gratitude, with many calling it an inspiring act of compassion.
With the funding secured, arrangements are being finalized for Phoebe to travel to India in the coming days to begin treatment. The medical team at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, where other Ghanaian children are also receiving care, has expressed readiness to receive and treat her immediately.
This is not the first time Ibrahim Mahama has come to the aid of individuals in critical medical need. His philanthropic interventions continue to make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable Ghanaians.

Eight Mpox cases confirmed in Ghana – GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed eight new cases of monkeypox (Mpox), sparking renewed concerns about the spread of the viral disease across the country.
Dr. Dennis Odai Laryea, Consultant Public Health Physician and Deputy Director of Surveillance at the GHS, disclosed the development during an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, May 23.

“Currently, we have eight confirmed cases. Cumulatively, for this year, we have nine. We had one case earlier in the year, which was quickly contained. This current outbreak, as of yesterday, has resulted in eight confirmed cases across two regions, Greater Accra and Western. Four cases have been recorded in each region.”
According to him, the Ghana Health Service has investigated over 100 suspected Mpox cases across the country as part of ongoing surveillance efforts. Although all 16 regions have reported suspected infections, confirmed cases have so far been recorded in only two regions, Greater Accra and Western.
“This is the essence of our surveillance system, identifying and responding to suspected cases before confirmation,” Dr. Laryea explained.
Mpox is a viral disease that spreads through close contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated objects. Symptoms typically include fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, back pain, muscle aches, headache, and general fatigue.
In response to the outbreak, the GHS urged the public to take preventive measures seriously. These include practising regular hand hygiene, avoiding physical contact with individuals showing symptoms such as rashes, and reporting any suspected cases to the nearest health facility immediately.
Health authorities are on high alert and have intensified public education and disease monitoring efforts in all regions to curb any potential spread.
