Manchester United concluded their turbulent 2024/25 Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on May 25, 2025.

The result dashed Villa’s aspirations for a Champions League spot, leaving them to settle for Europa League qualification.

The match’s turning point occurred in the 73rd minute when Villa’s Morgan Rogers appeared to equalize after a fumble by United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır.

However, referee Thomas Bramall had already blown the whistle for a foul on Bayındır, rendering the goal invalid and preventing VAR intervention.

Shortly thereafter, Amad Diallo broke the deadlock with a header from a Bruno Fernandes cross.

The lead was doubled when Christian Eriksen, in his final appearance for United, converted a penalty following a foul on Diallo by Ian Maatsen.

Villa’s frustrations were compounded by the earlier dismissal of goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez just before halftime for obstructing Rasmus Højlund, leaving them with ten men.

Despite Newcastle United’s loss to Everton, Villa’s defeat ensured they missed out on Champions League qualification, finishing sixth in the league.

Post-match, United manager Rúben Amorim addressed the fans, acknowledging the disappointing season and promising a brighter future.

The match not only marked the end of United’s challenging season but also served as a poignant farewell for Eriksen, whose final goal encapsulated his contribution to the club.
