Inter Milan 0-2 Fluminense: Brazilian Side Stun Italian Giants in Club World Cup Round of 16

Published

on

Brazilian club Fluminense pulled off a major upset at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, defeating Italian side Inter Milan 2-0 in the Round of 16 on Monday, June 30, at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, USA.

The match got off to a dramatic start when Fluminense scored in just the third minute. A deflected cross from Jhon Arias caused confusion in the Inter defense, allowing Germán Cano to head the ball past goalkeeper Yann Sommer following a miscommunication with Matteo Darmian. The early breakthrough gave the South American side a crucial advantage and set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Inter Milan responded with sustained possession—nearly 68% over the course of the match—but struggled to convert their dominance into meaningful chances. Despite the efforts of key players like Lautaro Martínez and Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Inter lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. Their best opportunity came in the 82nd minute when Martínez hit the post with a powerful strike, but the equalizer never came.

Fluminense briefly thought they had doubled their lead late in the first half when Felipe Melo’s header found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. Still, the Brazilian side remained composed, staying organized at the back and threatening on the counterattack.

Their efforts were rewarded in stoppage time. As Inter pushed forward in search of a goal, substitute Hércules struck in the 93rd minute, firing home from the edge of the box after a quick counter. The goal sealed a memorable 2-0 win for Fluminense and eliminated one of the tournament’s biggest names.

The result means Fluminense move on to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of Manchester City vs. Al-Hilal. For Inter Milan, it marks a bitter end to their Club World Cup hopes and compounds what has been a disappointing conclusion to their 2024–25 season, having finished second in both Serie A and the UEFA Champions League.

CR Flamengo 2–4 Bayern Munich: Kane Brace Sends Bavarians into Club World Cup Quarters

Bayern Munich booked their place in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals with a 4–2 win over Brazil’s Flamengo in an action-packed encounter at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Saturday, June 29, 2025.

The German champions came out flying, scoring twice in the opening ten minutes. Flamengo midfielder Erick Pulgar turned a Joshua Kimmich corner into his own net in the 6th minute, giving Bayern an early lead. Just three minutes later, Harry Kane struck a thunderous long-range effort that crashed off the post and in, doubling the advantage.

Flamengo, backed by a passionate crowd, responded through Gerson in the 33rd minute. The midfielder found space at the edge of the box and drilled home a fine finish to reduce the deficit. However, Bayern responded swiftly. Leon Goretzka smashed in a volley in the 42nd minute, restoring the two-goal cushion and sending the Bavarians into the break with a 3–1 lead.

The second half saw Flamengo push hard. They were rewarded when Michael Olise was penalized for a handball, and Jorginho calmly converted from the spot in the 55th minute to bring the score to 3–2. The Brazilian side continued to press, but Bayern’s discipline and composure kept them in control.

Harry Kane put the game beyond doubt in the 73rd minute with his second goal of the night. After a Flamengo defensive error, Kane pounced to finish clinically, securing the 4–2 victory. The England captain’s brace took his season tally to 41 goals and tied him for the most goals scored by an Englishman in Club World Cup history.

Bayern’s win sets up a blockbuster quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain. Meanwhile, Flamengo exit the tournament with pride after a spirited performance, but defensive lapses proved costly on the day.

Match Stats:

Goals: Flamengo 2 – 4 Bayern Munich

Possession: Flamengo 51% – 49% Bayern

Shots on Target: Flamengo 3 – 4 Bayern

Yellow Cards: Flamengo 4 – Bayern 5

With Harry Kane in top form and Bayern’s attack firing on all cylinders, the German side looks poised for a deep run in the tournament. Their next test against PSG promises to be another high-stakes thriller.

PSG 4–0 Inter Miami: Dominant Parisians Display Ends Messi’s Club World Cup Dream

Published

Paris Saint-Germain put on a masterclass in Atlanta, dispatching Inter Miami 4–0 in the Round of 16 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The European giants were ruthless, scoring all four goals in the first half to book their place in the quarter-finals and end Lionel Messi’s hopes of Club World Cup glory with his MLS side.

In front of a lively crowd of over 65,000 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, PSG wasted no time stamping their authority.

João Neves opened the scoring just six minutes in, heading home unmarked from a Vitinha free kick. The goal set the tone for what quickly became a one-sided affair.

Neves doubled the lead in the 39th minute, tapping in from close range after a slick combination between Bradley Barcola and Fabián Ruiz.

Inter Miami’s defense was in disarray, and their frustration grew when Tomás Avilés accidentally redirected a low cross into his own net in the 44th minute, effectively killing any chance of a comeback.

The final blow came moments later in stoppage time. A long-range effort struck the crossbar, and Achraf Hakimi reacted first to slot home the rebound and make it 4–0. PSG’s intensity and precision left Inter Miami reeling before the halftime whistle.

Luis Enrique’s side completely dominated the match, enjoying 66% possession and registering 19 shots to Inter Miami’s 7.

Messi, who returned to the Club World Cup for the first time since leaving Europe, was largely contained by PSG’s disciplined midfield and backline.

The Argentine, once the heart of Barcelona’s Club World Cup triumphs, found little joy against his former club.

The defeat marks Messi’s first-ever loss in the competition, ending a 16-year unbeaten run dating back to his debut appearance in 2009.

For Inter Miami, the result brings a disappointing end to an otherwise historic journey—becoming the first MLS side to reach the knockout stage of the newly expanded tournament.

PSG now shift their focus to the quarter-finals, where they will face either Flamengo or Bayern Munich on July 5.

With confidence soaring and their key players in top form, the French side looks poised to challenge for their first-ever Club World Cup title.

While Inter Miami’s dream run is over, the experience gained and the exposure on the world stage mark an important milestone in the club’s and Major League Soccer’s growing international presence.
