COVID-19 Resurfaces at University of Ghana: Health Authorities Sound the Alarm

The University of Ghana is currently grappling with a fresh wave of COVID-19 cases, prompting health officials on campus to issue a resurgence alert.
This development, confirmed by the university’s Directorate of Health Services, comes amid rising reports of suspected and confirmed cases within and around the Legon campus.
In a notice circulated on June 23, the Directorate warned of “several cases” recently detected and called on the university community to take immediate precautions.
While specific case numbers were not disclosed, authorities stressed the need for increased vigilance and adherence to preventive measures.
Precautionary Measures Reinstituted
To curb the spread of the virus, the university has reinstated several health and safety protocols, including:
Mandatory mask-wearing in enclosed or crowded spaces
Regular handwashing and use of hand sanitizers
Physical distancing of at least 1 metre
Avoidance of large gatherings unless necessary
Improved ventilation in lecture halls, offices, and other shared spaces
Enhanced screening and triage at all university health facilities.
Students, staff, and visitors are also being urged to stay home if they experience flu-like symptoms and to seek immediate medical attention from the University Hospital.
“Stay Alert, Stay Safe”
Health officials emphasized that while vaccines and prior exposure may have reduced the severity of COVID-19 symptoms in many cases, the virus still poses significant risks, especially to those with underlying health conditions.
The resurgence serves as a reminder that COVID-19 remains a public health threat, and complacency could reverse hard-won progress.
The university has committed to providing timely updates as the situation evolves and is working closely with national health authorities to monitor and manage the spread.
As the University of Ghana navigates this renewed public health challenge, community cooperation will be key to preventing a wider outbreak and ensuring campus life continues with minimal disruption.

Kalsoume Sinare, Namoale, 13 others land ambassadorial roles under Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed a new cohort of Ghanaian envoys, with veteran actress Kalsoume Sinare, former Member of Parliament for La-Dadekotopon Nii Amasah Namoale, and former Kumasi Mayor Kojo Bonsu among 15 individuals nominated for ambassadorial and high commissioner roles.
Academic giants, former Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Vice Chancellor Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso and the first female Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Associate Professor Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh, have also been appointed to different countries.
The appointments, which are subject to parliamentary approval, signal a bold move by President Mahama, featuring notable figures of a blend of public personalities, experienced politicians, and technocrats to champion Ghana’s interests abroad.
According to a letter from the Office of the President dated June 10, 2025, and signed by Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, PhD, these nominations were made after consultations with the Council of State, in accordance with Article 74 of the 1992 Constitution.
Kalsoume Sinare, a celebrated Ghanaian actress and former model, has been nominated as the Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain.
Known for her extensive career in Ghanaian cinema, featuring in over fifty films, Sinare has also been a vocal supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), publicly endorsing John Mahama in past elections.
Her appointment comes amidst reports of internal party discussions, as her name emerged on the list where her cousin, Alhaji Said Sinare, a seasoned NDC stalwart and former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, was reportedly considered.
Nii Amasah Namoale, a prominent figure within the NDC, has been nominated as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Federative Republic of Brazil.
Namoale, an agronomist by profession, served in Parliament from 2005 to 2017 and held ministerial positions, including Deputy Minister of Agriculture.
His extensive political experience is expected to bolster Ghana’s diplomatic ties in South America.

Woman remanded for allegedly stealing GH¢800k mistakenly transferred to her account

A trader, Constance Gyasi Nimako, has been remanded into lawful custody by an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing and laundering money mistakenly credited to her bank account.
Nimako, also known as Maa Adwoa, is alleged to have spent GH¢770,500 out of GH¢800,000 that was erroneously transferred to her Ecobank account.
She reportedly transferred GH¢300,000 to her mother’s account at Fidelity Bank and GH¢400,000 to her own account at GCB Bank, and withdrew GH¢70,500 in cash.
She has been charged with stealing and money laundering, while her mother, Cecilia Gyasi, has been charged with abetment of crime to wit money laundering. The two pleaded not guilty.
Presiding Judge, Mrs Susan Eduful, after listening to arguments from both the prosecution and defence, remanded Nimako due to the grave nature of the charge and concerns that she might not appear to stand trial.
Cecilia Gyasi was, however, granted bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties, who must be immediate family members earning not less than GH¢2,000 monthly.
The case has been adjourned to July 7, 2025.
The complainant, prosecution said, was the chief executive officer of a company (name withheld), which holds a bank account with Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) and a personal account with Ecobank Ghana.
On February 4, 2025, the complainant instructed the Manet Branch of CBG to transfer GH¢800,000 from the company’s CBG account to his personal Ecobank account for a business transaction.
However, in executing the transfer, the complainant mistakenly quoted Nimako’s Ecobank account number instead of his own.
The funds were erroneously transferred into Nimako’s account on February 6, 2025.
The error came to light when the complainant followed up with CBG about the delay in the expected transfer.
Upon discovering the mistake, CBG contacted Ecobank to recall the funds, only to learn that by February 11, Nimako had already moved the money, leaving only GH¢29,778.47 in the account.
Efforts by both banks to retrieve the money proved futile as she refused to return the funds.
The Head of Security and Investigations at CBG subsequently assisted the complainant to report the matter to the police.
The prosecution said when contacted by the police, Nimako refused to cooperate, rained insults and curses on the officers, and went into hiding.
She was later arrested in Kumasi, while her mother, Gyasi, was arrested in Accra.
Investigations revealed that Nimako informed her mother about the money and instructed her to withdraw the GH¢300,000 transferred into her account, which she did.
During interrogation, Nimako claimed the money was sent to her by a foreign company with whom she had no prior dealings.
She further claimed she had ordered goods with the funds and was awaiting their delivery.
Prosecution indicated that investigations are ongoing to trace and recover the remaining amount.

VIDEO: ADA SHS Dismisses 20 Students For Leaving Campus To Swim In River

Twenty final-year students of Ada Senior High School in the Greater Accra Region have been dismissed after sneaking off campus to swim in a nearby river—a decision that ended in tragedy when one of them drowned.
The incident, which has sparked public outcry, was highlighted in a viral video that emerged on Saturday, June 21, 2025. The footage, taken during an emergency assembly, captured a woman believed to be the headmistress addressing the students and outlining the disciplinary action taken.
“Your parents will come and wait patiently for you. When you finish, they will take you back till you are done with your WASSCE papers. If your parents do not have time, that one is between you and them. It is your business,” she said sternly.
Watch the video below:
Authorities have since retrieved the body of the deceased student, and investigations are ongoing.
This incident at Ada SHS comes on the heels of a similar tragedy at Lawra Senior High School in the Upper West Region. On the morning of Saturday, June 14, 2025, seven students drowned when their canoe capsized in the Dikpe River during an early morning jogging session. The group had reportedly attempted to cross the river using the canoe.
Both incidents have raised fresh concerns over student safety and the need for stricter supervision during extracurricular activities.
