The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has justified its disconnection of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) from the national power grid, citing persistent failure to honour payment agreements.

The action, taken on Tuesday, June 17, forms part of ECG’s ongoing nationwide revenue mobilisation and disconnection exercise targeting public and private institutions with outstanding electricity bills.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, ECG’s Acting General Manager of Operations, Ishmael Tetteh Oku, said both entities were given ample notice but failed to comply with agreed payment terms.

“We have given them enough notice. The amount for GBC is over GH¢8 million, and that of Ghana Water Limited is GH¢999 million. These are long-standing arrears,” he stated.

He explained that ECG had engaged both institutions repeatedly and reached payment arrangements that were ultimately not honoured.

“For Ghana Water, we have disconnected their headquarters and all their administrative offices, except the pumping station, because we are looking at the interest of the general masses. Once you put out the pumping station, it means the nation will not have water,” he said.

Mr. Oku noted that while ECG is mindful of the public interest and essential services, the company must act to recover revenues needed to sustain power supply.

“In fact, we are not happy to disconnect any customer, but when the need arises, we have no choice,” he added.

ECG says the move is part of a broader effort to address persistent non-payment challenges and boost financial stability across the power sector.

The case docket involving 11 military personnel suspected to be linked to the alleged assault of three civilians at Danyame, a suburb of Kumasi, has been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office in the Ashanti Region for review.

This development was revealed during a court hearing on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

The incident, which occurred on March 28, 2025, involved the arrest of three men: Kwame Adu, also known as Ogee, Kwabena Sarfo, and Christian Obiri Yeboah, popularly known as Kofi Yesu.

The victims were reportedly apprehended by uniformed military personnel and taken to the 4th Infantry Battalion (4BN) barracks in Kumasi, where they were allegedly subjected to brutal assault. Two of the men later died from injuries sustained during the ordeal.

The arrests were made after allegations that the three persons had stolen an iPhone belonging to a civilian.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution, supported by military intelligence, disclosed that the suspects were not being held in the military guardroom as earlier suggested.

They therefore prayed the court to reconsider its decision and remand the accused persons into police custody instead.

Additionally, the prosecution expressed concern over delays in producing the accused persons in court.

Ekume Emmanuel Mawuli Esq., sitting as a district magistrate at the Suame District Court, cautioned the military command to strictly adhere to the court’s directives regarding the custody location of the accused; otherwise, he would be forced to remand them into police custody.

The case has been adjourned to July 3, 2025.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has expressed satisfaction with the successful conduct of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), describing its performance as commendable despite a few logistical challenges.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday June 17, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, stated that the Council had fulfilled its responsibility of ensuring a smooth examination process for all candidates nationwide.

“I will say that on our part, we will pat ourselves on the back and say that we did a good job,” he said. “Usually, after examinations, what you expect as an examining body is that every candidate is provided the opportunity to write—in terms of questions, in terms of stationery. All of these things went to the candidates.”

Mr. Kapi acknowledged a few minor issues, including delays in the delivery of exam materials. In one instance, he noted, a vehicle broke down while transporting question papers, while in another case, the difficult terrain and long distance to a centre caused a delay.

He emphasised that the issues were quickly addressed. “On subsequent days, they decided to provide an extra vehicle, and so they were able to make it in good time,” he added.

Meanwhile, the last paper for the 2025 BECE is Arabic (Essay & Objective) and it will take place tomorrow Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
