Asiedu Nketiah Sworn In As Board Chairman of GPHA

Published

on

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has been formally sworn in as the Board Chairman of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Wednesday, 25th June 2025, and also marked the induction of Prof Ransford Gyampo, acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, as a member of the newly reconstituted GPHA Board.

The appointments form part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen the governance structure of the GPHA and provide strategic leadership in the ongoing development and regulation of Ghana’s port infrastructure.

The new board is tasked with setting the policy direction for the Authority, improving operational efficiency, and supporting key infrastructure expansion projects across the country’s major ports.

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority plays a central role in facilitating international trade, and the new leadership is expected to drive reforms aimed at boosting competitiveness, enhancing revenue mobilisation, and positioning Ghana as a leading maritime hub in West Africa.

Ghanaians Divided As Gay Couple Share Kissing Photos At Independence Arch

Published

on

Rue and Lue, two South African males, sparked a social media frenzy by posting images of themselves kissing beneath Ghana’s renowned Independence Arch.

The couple, dressed in synchronised red clothes, posed fondly at one of Ghana’s most iconic national monuments. One of the males, who has light complexion, wore an oversized red and black tailored suit, while his dark-skinned buddy wore a red leather jacket, matching shorts, and a red shirt.

Their daring exhibition of adoration beneath the monument, widely considered as a symbol of national pride and liberty, has elicited a wide range of reactions from netizens.

Mixed reactions.
Some online users complimented the couple for bravely advocating for LGBTQ+ visibility in a region where homosexuality is still widely stigmatised and criminalised.

Many others, however, expressed significant opposition—not to their sexual orientation, but to the perceived disrespect of a national emblem.

Critics contended that the Independence Arch is more than just a tourist attraction; it is an important cultural and historical site.

This is demeaning to our nation’s culture. This has nothing to do with homophobia, but rather your blatant disdain for the people of our country. Why not capture these images in Saudi Arabia? Or Qatar?

wrote one user.

Saminiwaa, a media figure, chimed in on the debate with a post that acknowledged the importance of LGBTQ+ rights activism but questioned the execution.

I wholeheartedly support the struggle against homophobia and the movement for equal rights. But this is not the way to go about things. There is a difference between raising awareness and breaching legal or cultural boundaries. Disregarding rules or desecrating national symbols does not help the cause; it risks generating additional resentment and making it tougher for those who are truly harmed.

She wrote.

She continued:

Advocacy should encourage understanding, not elicit unneeded resistance. We need smarter and more courteous strategies to create change.

The matter took another turn when some users claimed that the conduct was part of a state-sponsored effort to gain international LGBTQ+ help and publicity. One comment, which referenced the monument’s visibility and the expected presence of security, suggested ulterior reasons for the photoshoot.

I believe this is a government-sponsored operation designed to draw aid and support from the LGBTQ+ community. How else can we explain the fact that this behaviour occurred within a defined security surveillance zone? Guess who uploaded it… KOD,

Suzzy Adwoa Pinamang, a second-year student at the Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, Kumasi, Ashanti Region, who was unintentionally shot in the eye by a classmate, has had life-changing eye surgery at London’s world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Suzzy arrived in the United Kingdom on Saturday, May 10, 2025, accompanied by a carer who happens to be her brother.

The information was supplied by Rafik Mahama, Special Aide to Mr Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers and Planners Ltd, and Dzata Cement Ltd, which totally sponsored the surgery.

According to Mr Mahama’s declaration, the treatment took place on June 2, 2025, and was declared a success.

“Suzzy is currently on her way to full recovery. She has already begun to regain her independence, and she can now see on her own, according to the latest report.

The statement expressed profound gratitude to the medical teams engaged in both Ghana and the United Kingdom, particularly the professionals at Moorfields Eye Hospital, which is known for providing cutting-edge ophthalmic care.

Special thanks were also extended to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ghana High Commission in London, the outgoing UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, Francis Asenso-Boakye, Roger Pope Opticians in London, members of the media, and the general public for their support.

“We are especially grateful to Mr Ibrahim Mahama, whose generosity and full support made this entire process possible for Suzzy,” a press release said.

Govt to recruit 50,000 teachers, 10,000 non-teaching staff in 2025 – Haruna Iddrisu

Published

on

Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, has declared that the government plans to hire 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in the 2025 calendar year as part of efforts to develop the education sector.

Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, the minister informed the House that appropriate funding has been allocated in the national budget for 2025 to support mass recruitment.

His remarks also addressed concerns voiced by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who requested an investigation into the alleged mistreatment of teachers who recently protested at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters.

Haruna Iddrisu denied the allegations and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the pending posting difficulties, while ensuring that recruits are deployed to boost learning results throughout the country.

“This morning, I met with Bafour Eric, and I will shortly release the details to the public. We addressed the matter, and he informed me that approval was acquired in May. They were supposed to begin work in August, but instead started in September.

“Naturally, by December 31, the Finance Ministry’s permission had expired, and they could only proceed with a renewed clearance, which I am currently awaiting. Let them rest assured.

“Mr. Speaker, as I have pledged this House, 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff will be recruited. The 2025 budget includes adequate provisions for this,” he stated.
